How to Catch Your First Pal in Palworld
Author: Palworld.space TeamPublished on 2026-07-15Updated on 2026-07-15
TL;DR — 30-Second Summary
- What you need: Pal Spheres (craft at Primitive Workbench, 1 Paldium Fragment each) + a weapon (Wooden Club, 5 Wood)
- Target: Lamball or Cattiva on the starting beach. HP must be below ~30% for a decent capture rate.
- The sequence: Hit it → Lower HP to 20-30% → Throw sphere from behind (+50% capture rate) → Wait for shake → Done.
- If it breaks free: Throw another sphere immediately. The HP stays low. DON'T kill it — if you do, find another one.

What You Need Before You Start
| Item | How to Get | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Pal Sphere (3+) | Craft at Primitive Workbench | 1 Paldium Fragment each |
| Paldium Fragments | Break blue crystal rocks on the beach | Free (just punch them) |
| Wooden Club | Craft in inventory (Lv 1 tech) | 5 Wood |
| Primitive Workbench | Craft in build menu | 15 Wood, 10 Stone |
Getting Started (1 Minute Setup)
- Punch 3 trees → collect 10 Wood
- Pick up 5 stones from the ground → collect 10 Stone
- Break 3 blue crystals on the beach → collect 3 Paldium Fragments
- Open inventory → Craft tab → make Wooden Club (5 Wood)
- Open build menu (B) → place Primitive Workbench (15 Wood, 10 Stone)
- Use the workbench → craft 3 Pal Spheres (1 Paldium Fragment each)
Pro tip: Craft 5+ spheres. New players often miss their first few throws.
Step-by-Step: Catch Your First Pal
1. Find a Target
Walk the starting beach. You'll see Lamball (fluffy sheep) and Cattiva (pink cats) within 10 seconds of spawning. These are the easiest targets.
2. Lower Its HP
Equip your Wooden Club (press the weapon slot key). Hit the Pal repeatedly.
- Watch the HP bar above its head. You want it at 20-30% remaining (the bar turns red/orange).
- Stop attacking when HP is low. One more hit could kill it.
- Average hits needed: 3-4 club swings for Lamball, 4-5 for Cattiva.
- DON'T use your Pals to attack — they may kill the target with critical hits.
3. Throw the Pal Sphere
| Step | PC Key | Console (Xbox/PS5) |
|---|---|---|
| Equip sphere | Scroll wheel or number key | D-pad |
| Aim | Mouse | Right stick |
| Throw | Q (default) | RT / R2 |
- Aim at the Pal's body, not the ground near it.
- Throw from behind — attacking from the rear gives +50% capture rate. Circle around the Pal before throwing.
- The sphere will fly toward the Pal. If you miss, the sphere is NOT consumed (you can pick it up).
4. Wait for the Shake
The sphere closes around the Pal and shakes 1-3 times:
- 3 shakes + click → Success! The Pal is yours.
- Sphere breaks → Capture failed. The Pal escapes with the same low HP. Throw another.
- Sphere misses entirely → Pick it up from the ground and try again.
5. First Capture Complete
After a successful capture:
- The Pal appears in your party (right side of screen)
- You gain XP based on the Pal's level
- The Pal is now yours — it follows you and fights with you
Which Pal Should You Catch First?
| Pal | HP | Difficulty | Why Catch It |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lamball | ~80 | Very Easy | Handiwork Lv 1, Transport Lv 1 — your first base worker. Produces Wool. |
| Cattiva | ~90 | Very Easy | Mining Lv 1, Handiwork Lv 1 — mines stone at your base. |
| Chikipi | ~70 | Very Easy | Produces Eggs in the ranch (food + cake ingredient). Runs away but goes down in 2 hits. |
| Foxparks | ~100 | Easy | Kindling Lv 1 — essential for cooking and smelting. Slightly tougher than starting Pals. |
Recommended order: Lamball → Cattiva → Foxparks. These 3 give you Handiwork, Mining, and Kindling — the 3 most important early-game work skills.
Why Isn't It Working? — Troubleshooting
| Problem | Why | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| "Sphere misses every time" | Aiming reticle isn't on the Pal | Make sure the reticle turns red (indicating lock-on) before throwing. Walk closer if needed. |
| "Sphere breaks instantly, no shake" | Pal's HP is too high | Lower HP further. Below 30% gives the best odds. At full HP, capture rate is near zero. |
| "I killed the Pal" | Over-damage at low HP | Use fists instead of club for the last few hits (lower damage). Or switch to a weaker weapon. |
| "Ran out of Pal Spheres" | Didn't craft enough / missed throws | Craft more at Primitive Workbench. Each costs 1 Paldium Fragment. Break more blue crystals on the beach. |
| "Spheres won't craft" | No Primitive Workbench or wrong materials | Make sure you have a workbench placed AND the required materials (1 Paldium Fragment per sphere). |
| "Pal I want isn't spawning" | Wrong location or time of day | Lamball/Cattiva/Chikipi spawn 24/7 on the starting beach. For other Pals, check the Paldeck. |
